CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION POLICY COMMITTEE MINUTES
October 6, 2015
 
The Curriculum and Instruction Policy Committee met on October 6, 2015, at 3:30 p.m. in the President’s Conference Room.  In attendance were Jim Atkinson, Ava Connelly, Peter Dorman, Michael Farris, Donna Hobbs, Jeff Laub, Brent Lester, Muriel Mickles, and Kris Ogden.
 
Brent Lester called the meeting to order.   Brent asked for nominations or volunteers for committee chair.  Peter Dorman made a motion to nominate Brent Lester to serve as committee chair.  Ava Connelly seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.  Peter Dorman made a motion to nominate Ava Connelly to serve as the recorder. Muriel Mickles seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.
 
Energy Technology Career Studies Certificate
 
Jeff Laub presented the Energy Technology Career Studies Certificate which was designed in cooperation with the Virginia Energy Workforce Consortium to meet the need for energy technicians throughout the state, particularly in Central Virginia.  The need is due to the pending shortage of energy technicians due to normal attrition and aging energy workforce.  The curriculum is designed to meet the requirements for the Energy Industry Fundamentals Certificate that is awarded by the Center for Energy Workforce Development.  The Central Virginia Energy Alliance is acting as the academic advisory committee in the development of this program.  Jeff informed the committee that there may be a change to the program in order to meet national standards.  NAS 195 – Physical Science for Energy may be dropped and additional credit hours added to ENE 195 – Energy Industry Fundamentals.  The national representative will provide clarification on this.  Jeff will distribute a revised proposal, if a change is made.  The career studies certificate will be part of the CTE program beginning Fall 2016.  The proposed program of 16 total credit hours qualifies for Financial Aid. The committee agreed to approve both versions of the proposal, with the understanding that once clarification is received from the national representative, the revised curriculum will be distributed to the committee.  Peter made a motion that the curriculum be approved, with the addition of a rationale. Donna Hobbs seconded the motion.  The committee unanimously approved the career studies certificate.
 
Communication Design A.A.S. Degree
 
Donna Hobbs discussed the proposed changes for the Communication Design Associate of Applied Science Degree.  Donna stated that the addition of a video creation and production course (PHT 130 – Video I) is necessary to stay abreast of current technology.  This is based on feedback from graduates of the program.  The addition of a three-credit course in typography (ART 141 – Typography I) is also being proposed, as this will make the program consistent with other VCCS programs in the Communication Design area.  The need for these additions is reflected in the results from the 2014-15 program assessments.  It was determined that the removal of three credit hours of painting would have the least impact on students’ preparation for the workforce.  Donna stated that in order to address concerns about retention in the curriculum, SDV 101 – Orientation to Communication Design would replace SDV 100 – College Success Skills.  The proposed curriculum changes would be implemented Fall 2016. Jeff Laub made a motion to approve the proposed changes, with suggested formatting revisions.  Muriel Mickles seconded the motion.  The committee unanimously approved the changes to the program, with recommended formatting changes.
 
The minutes from the June 29, 2015, meeting were distributed to the committee.  Jeff Laub stated that a sentence reflecting the committee’s approval of the Manufacturing Technology Career Studies Certificated needed to be added.  Muriel Mickles made a motion to approve the minutes with the one addition.  Peter Dorman seconded the motion.  The minutes were approved, with one change.
 
The committee agreed that all proposed curriculum changes and new programs will include the implementation date in the rationale.
 
Muriel stated that new curricula will be published in the daily bulletin once they have been approved and a program number has been assigned.
 
The meeting was adjourned at 4 p.m.
