Curriculum and Instruction Policy Committee Meeting
April 4, 2018
 
The Curriculum and Instruction Policy Committee Meeting met on April 4, 2018, and those attending the meeting included Kris Ogden, Dr. Cynthia Wallin, Dr. Peter Dorman, Matt Poteat, Jim Tuitte, Kevin Riley, Patty Saffioti, Collins Friddle, Dr. Jim Lemons, Ava Connelly, Brent Lester, and John McCullough. 
 
Minutes of the October 12, 2017, meeting were approved. 
 
Administrative Management Technology A.A.S. – Dr. Lemons
Requested changes are as listed below:
1.      Removing original footnote #1 related to AST 101 – Keyboarding I that allowed students to decide if they felt ready to go directly to AST 102.  Students found AST 102 difficult without taking AST 101 for a general foundation course.  A student can test out of AST 101 if they consider themselves to be proficient in keyboarding.
2.      Adding BUS 226 back to Computer Elective, which allows students to choose between BUS 226, ITE 115, or ITE 119 for the program.
3.      Minor changes such as sequence, terms offered, and updated prerequisites to ensure students can complete the program within the required timeframe. 
4.      MTH 120 will be replaced by MTH 130.
5.      Footnote #2 change – MTH 151 or higher may be substituted for MTH 120 will be changed to MTH 154 or higher may be substituted for MTH 130.
*Approved and seconded with the caveat that line item 23, Humanities elective, be changed from a major course type to a general education course type.
 
Administrative Management Technology – Medical Office Specialization
Requested changes are as listed below:
1.      Removing original footnote #1 related to AST 101 – Keyboarding I that allowed students to decide if they felt ready to go directly to AST 102.  Students found AST 102 difficult without taking AST 101.  A student can test out of AST 101 if they consider themselves to be proficient in keyboarding.

Requested changes are as listed below:

Requested changes are as listed below:
1.      Removing ENG 131 and replacing it with AST 205.  The local advisory board agreed with this change as AST 205 provides business letter writing skills and is geared more toward a business student.
2.      Adding BUS 226 back to Computer Elective which allows students to choose between BUS 226, ITE 115, or ITE 119 for the program.
3.      Deleting BUS 202 as an option for line item #19.
4.      Minor sequence changes to ensure students can complete the program within the required timeframe. 
5.      MTH 120 will be replaced by MTH 130 and will be changed to a general education course type.
6.      Footnote #3 change – MTH 151 or higher may be substituted for MTH 120 will be changed to MTH 154 or higher may be substituted for MTH 130.
*Approved and seconded with the caveat that line item 12, Social Science elective, be changed from a major course type to a general education course type.

 
Management A.A.S. – Human Resources Specialization
Requested changes are as listed below:
1.      Removing ENG 131 and replacing it with AST 205.  The local advisory board agreed with this change as AST 205 provides business letter writing skills and is geared more toward a business student.
2.      Adding BUS 226 back to Computer Elective which allows students to choose between BUS 226, ITE 115, or ITE 119 for the program.

2.      Removing ENG 131 and replacing it with AST 205.  The local advisory board agreed with this change as AST 205 provides business letter writing skills and is geared more toward a business student.
3.      Adding BUS 226 back to Computer Elective which allows students to choose between BUS 226, ITE 115, or ITE 119 for the program.
4.      Minor changes such as sequence, terms offered, and updated prerequisites to ensure students can complete the program within the required timeframe.

Medical Coding Career Studies Certificate
Requested changes are as listed below:
1.       Reversing the sequence order of HIM 254 and HIM 253 whereas HIM 253 will be the suggested first course of the two. 
2.      Adding BUS 226 back to Computer Elective which allows students to choose between BUS 226, ITE 115, or ITE 119 for the program.
3.      Minor changes such as sequence, terms offered, and updated prerequisites to ensure students can complete the program within the required timeframe. 
Approved and seconded.
 
Engineering Technology A.A.S. – Dr. Wallin
It was reiterated that all prerequisites that are listed in the pathways that are not prerequisites listed in the master Course File will be removed. 
1.      Moving SDV 100 to the #1 course.
2.      Deleting the prerequisite of MTE 9 from MTH 167.
3.      Deleting HLT 100, PSY 200 and ELE 118 and replacing them with ETR 113 and DRF 161, which will decrease total AAS credits from 66 to 64. 
4.      Replacing DRF 202 with DRF 241. 
5.      Replacing MTH 173 with MTH 263.
6.      CHM 111 will be changed from a major course type to a general education course type.
7.      Deleting the prerequisite of DRF 201 from DRF 241.
Approved and seconded. 
 
Machine Tool Diploma
1.      MTH 103 will be replaced by MTH 111.
2.      MTH 104 will be replaced by ECO 120.
3.      Footnote #1 change to students whose placement test scores qualify for placement in MTH 131, 154, 155 or 161 are encouraged to take one of these higher level sequences in lieu of MTH 111.
 
Machine Shop Certificate
Requested changes are as listed below:
1.      MTH 103 will be replaced by MTH 111.
2.      MTH 104 will be replaced by ECO 120.
3.      Footnote #1 change to students whose placement test scores qualify for placement in MTH 131, 154, 155 or 161 are encouraged to take one of these higher level sequences in lieu of MTH 111.

Communication Design A.A.S. – Dr. Dorman
Requested changes are as listed below:
1.      The Purpose of the Communication Design A.A.S. in the CVCC catalog will be changed to comply with EAB requirements.
2.      Original length, occupational possibilities, admissions requirements and program requirements were edited for catalog/website without Curriculum Committee review/approval.
3.      Removing SDV 100 and replacing with SDV 101, Orientation to Communication Design.
4.      Changing #6 footnote to Requirement can be satisfied with any BUS or MKT class except BUS 226.
5.      Changes to course descriptions made based on changes to Master Course File list due to peer group changes for better transferability.
6.      Reordering Pathway to improve scheduling for students. 
7.      Footnote #3 change – MTH 151 or higher may be substituted for MTH 120 will be changed to MTH 154 or higher may be substituted for MTH 130.

Proposed Discontinuation of EMT – Intermediate Career Studies Certificate – Dr. Lemons
The EMT Intermediate certification will be discontinued by the Office of EMS in 2020 and will no longer be an active program.  A teach-out plan will be proposed.  The majority of students will be able to finish out the program and graduate this year.  Advisory board suggested updating the program to current standards.  New program will be EMT Advanced.  Dr. Lemons is awaiting the curriculum changes to make schedule adjustments.  This will be tabled until there is more information available regarding the classes and changes. 
Welding Technology Certificate changes, Computer and Electronics Technology – Computer Networking A.A.S., as well as the EMS program changes will be tabled until the next meeting to be held on 05/02/2018 at 2 p.m.
